June
In June the allotment is growing really well and the weather is warm and the chances of a frost have now past. Some of the earlies can now be harvested now. You can now also plant tender vegetables. The main best jobs to do are:
ü Hoe any weeds.
ü Give plants a good watering in dry weather.
ü Pot on any more vegetable plants.
What to sow?
Continue to sow Lettuce, and Radishes etc. Do these in small rows for a continuous supply. There is still time to sow sweetcorn. Transplant your brassicas outside now.
July
July is one of the hottest months of the year. This month you can start to enjoy some of you produce that you have grown throughout the season. However you need to start thinking about sowing winter seeds. The main best jobs to carry out this month are:
ü Water well in dry weather.
ü Hoe regularly to keep weeds down.
ü Ensure ponds are topped up in dry spells of weather.
What to sow?
Sow some spring cabbage so it is strong enough to survive the winter. It is also possible to sow some winter peas. You can also sow some Overwintering Leeks, sprouting broccoli & spring broccoli. Also it is possible to some some carrots for an autumn crop.
August
This month it is mainly hot however most of the hard work is done by now so you should make the most of your summer produce. The main best jobs to carry out are:
ü Water well in dry weather.
ü Keep hoeing to keep weeds down.
ü Sow some over wintering green manures such as alfalfa.
ü Trim any hedges.
ü Keep ponds topped up.
What to sow?
Plant strawberry plants before the winter arrives. Also sow some lettuce and spring onions. Sow some winter spinach before the first frosts come. You can sow a winter variety of radish. You can also sow some parsley under a cloche for use during the winter.
September
In September the autumn is coming up very soon and the temperatures are cooling down now therefore it is time to harvesting the last of your summer crops such as potatoes before the first frosts come. The main best jobs to carry out this month are:
ü Start off a new compost heap.
ü Hoe ground to keep any weeds down.
ü Clear any autumn debris falling i.e. leaves ? you can use the leaves for leaf mold.
What to sow?
Sow a winter variety of lettuce such as 'winter density'.
October
During October the temperatures are dropping and frosts at night are likely so there is autumn clearing in progress now of all the beds. The main best jobs to carry out are:
ü Collect leaves this can be used for leaf mold.
ü How weeds to keep the plot tidy.
ü Carry out any needed digging.
What to sow?
During the autumn it is time to plant winter crops such as over wintering Japanese onion sets, garlic and winter cabbage. Also sow some green manures to improve the soil condition.
