Keeping strawberry's tidy

Do you find it difficult to keep your strawberry patch weeded once the runners have started shooting of the plants?

By using weed control fabric you could keep you strawberry's mulched. Also this will help to retain moisture within the soil

The best time to carry this out is spring when you are planting them.

Lay the fabric on flat weed free soil on cut crosses in the fabric where you want to plant the strawberries.

Then make a hole in the cross then plant the strawberry in the hole.

The disadvantage of the method is that it can give slugs and snails a place to hide underneath however from trying this method myself I have not found that I have lost any strawberries by slugs eating them.

Also you should net your strawberry's this will prevent birds eating them and it will keep debris out.

Potato Experiment

These photographs below show my allotment neighbours potato experiment which was planting some first early potatoes in February and then mulching the top of them with straw and and some clear polything covering the top to retain warmth.

Now the season is moving rapidly on the cover is being lifted most daytimes and re placed at night to harden the tubers off.

This trial has found to be very successful to date.
